Should You Go to the Canton Fair? A Guide for Bangladeshi Importers

Twice a year, Guangzhou hosts the largest trade fair in the world, and every autumn a number of Bangladeshi importers ask the same question: is it worth going?

The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you are trying to do, and that a badly planned trip is an expensive way to collect business cards. The autumn 2026 session runs from mid-October, so if you are considering it, the decision needs making now rather than in October.

The 2026 autumn dates

The 140th session is held in three separate phases, each running five days:

  • Phase 1: 15 to 19 October 2026
  • Phase 2: 23 to 27 October 2026
  • Phase 3: 31 October to 4 November 2026

The venue is the China Import and Export Fair Complex in the Pazhou area of Guangzhou, and halls generally run from 9:30 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening.

Note where these sit relative to China's autumn holidays. Golden Week runs 1 to 7 October, so Phase 1 opens about a week after the country goes back to work. That is a busy, congested week for factories catching up, which our guide to Golden Week's effect on shipping explains in more detail.

The phases are not interchangeable

This is the single most common and most expensive mistake. The three phases carry different product categories, and there is no overlap worth relying on. Turning up in Phase 2 to source electronics means walking halls full of furniture and housewares.

Broadly:

  • Phase 1 is the industrial and technical session — electronics, appliances, machinery, vehicles, hardware
  • Phase 2 leans towards home and consumer goods — housewares, gifts, furniture, ceramics, building materials
  • Phase 3 covers fashion, textiles, footwear, toys, health and food products

Published category lists vary slightly between sources, and some categories move between sessions over time. Before you book anything, check the official category listing for the current session against your specific product. Booking flights around the wrong phase is a mistake you cannot fix once you are there.

What the fair is genuinely good for

There are things a trade fair does that no amount of online research replaces.

Touching the product. You can feel the material, test the mechanism, compare three suppliers' versions of the same item side by side within a few minutes. For anything where quality is tactile — fabric, finish, build — this is worth the airfare on its own.

Meeting the person. A supplier relationship built over messages is thin. Fifteen minutes in front of a real salesperson tells you things about a company that a profile page never will.

Discovering what you were not looking for. Walking halls surfaces products and categories you would never have searched for. Importers routinely come back with a line they had not considered.

Comparing the field quickly. The concentration is the point. What would take weeks of enquiries online happens in a day of walking.

What it is not good for

Equally, some expectations lead to disappointment.

It is not where you get the lowest price. Fair exhibitors are set up for international buyers and quote accordingly. The domestic wholesale platforms are usually cheaper, which is the trade-off our guide to buying from 1688 covers.

It is not a substitute for verification. A polished booth is a marketing investment, not evidence of manufacturing capability. Some exhibitors are trading companies rather than factories. Everything you would normally check still needs checking.

It is not efficient for a single known product. If you know exactly what you want and who makes it, a fair is an expensive way to place an order you could have placed by email.

It is not a place to close deals on the spot. Prices quoted at a booth are opening positions, and the samples you are shown are the best the factory can produce, not the average.

Planning, in the order things need doing

Start the visa now. Bangladeshi passport holders require a visa for mainland China, and processing takes time you may not have if you begin in October. Registering as a buyer with the fair generates an invitation letter that supports the application. Confirm the current requirements and processing times with the Chinese visa authorities directly, since these change.

Register early for your badge. Buyer registration opens ahead of the session and saves queuing on arrival.

Book accommodation before the rush. Guangzhou hotel prices rise sharply during fair periods, and the closer to Pazhou you stay, the earlier you need to book.

Plan the halls before you arrive. The complex is enormous. Walking it without a target list is how a five-day trip becomes two useful conversations. Identify the halls carrying your category and the specific exhibitors you want to see.

Bring more business cards than you think. And a way to record which card belongs to which conversation, because by day three they blur.

If you cannot travel

Not attending is a perfectly reasonable decision, and there are alternatives that cost far less.

The fair runs an online platform alongside the physical event, which is worth using even if only to see who is exhibiting in your category. Guangzhou's permanent wholesale markets operate year-round and are covered in our guide to sourcing from Guangzhou, and for smaller commodity lines, Yiwu is often the better destination in any case.

You can also send someone. A sourcing agent already in China can walk the halls on your behalf, collect samples and shortlist suppliers for a fraction of the cost of flying — our guide to what a China sourcing agent does covers how that arrangement works.

A realistic plan for a first visit

If you decide to go, go with a narrow objective rather than a broad one.

Pick one product category. Identify twenty exhibitors in advance and aim to have real conversations with eight of them. Collect samples rather than promises. Take photographs of booth displays with the company name visible, because your notes will not be enough later.

Then do the actual work after you get home: verify the shortlist, request quotes in writing, order samples through a normal commercial process, and inspect before you commit. The fair is where you find candidates. It is not where you should be making final decisions.

Session dates and category allocations are set by the organisers and can change, so confirm against the official Canton Fair listing before booking travel.
