What a China Sourcing Agent Does (and When You Need One)

A China sourcing agent is someone on the ground in China who finds suppliers, negotiates prices, checks quality, and manages your order until it ships. For many first-time or busy importers, an agent is the difference between a smooth order and a costly mistake.

What a sourcing agent actually does

A good sourcing agent typically handles:

  • Finding and vetting factories or trading companies for your product
  • Negotiating price, minimum order quantity, and payment terms
  • Communicating with the factory in Chinese, avoiding translation problems
  • Checking samples before you commit to a full production run
  • Visiting the factory or arranging inspection during production
  • Coordinating pickup and handoff to your freight forwarder

Sourcing agent vs buying directly

Buying directly means you talk to the supplier yourself, usually through Alibaba or a similar platform. It can work well once you know a product and supplier category, but it puts all the vetting, negotiation, and quality risk on you. An agent adds a local, experienced layer between you and the factory, at the cost of a service fee, usually a small percentage of the order value or a flat charge per shipment.

When a sourcing agent is worth it

An agent tends to pay for itself when:

  • You are sourcing a new product category for the first time
  • The order value is large enough that a quality mistake would be expensive
  • You do not have time to manage back-and-forth communication with a factory
  • You want someone physically able to visit the factory if something goes wrong

When you may not need one

If you already have a reliable, repeat supplier and a simple product, going direct can save the agent's fee. Many importers start with an agent for their first few orders, then move some products direct once they trust the supplier.
