How to Find a Reliable Supplier on Alibaba (and Avoid Scams)

Alibaba is a powerful place to find Chinese suppliers, but not every seller is a real factory, and a few are outright scams. Here is how to protect yourself and find a partner you can trust.
Look for verification badges
Start with suppliers that carry credibility signals:
- Verified Supplier or Gold Supplier status
- Trade Assurance enabled
- Several years on the platform
- Real factory photos, not just stock images
These do not guarantee perfection, but they filter out the riskiest sellers.
Tell factories apart from trading companies
Both can work, but it helps to know who you are dealing with. A factory usually specializes in a narrow product range; a trading company lists a huge variety of unrelated products. Factories often give better prices; trading companies can be useful when you want many product types from one contact.
Ask the right questions
Before you pay anything, ask:
- Can you send a sample before bulk production?
- What is your minimum order quantity?
- What are your payment terms?
- Can you share past export records or references?
A serious supplier answers clearly. Vague or evasive replies are a warning sign.
Red flags to avoid
- Prices far below everyone else
- Requests to pay to a personal account instead of a company account
- Pressure to pay quickly or in full upfront
- No willingness to provide a sample
A step-by-step verification checklist
Before you commit to a supplier, work through this checklist:
- Confirm the business license. Ask for the company's official Chinese business registration number and cross-check it on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, China's public business registry. A real factory has nothing to hide here.
- Check how long they have actually operated. A registration date from last month behind a "10 years of experience" listing is a red flag.
- Ask for a live video call. A genuine factory will usually show you the production floor on request. A trading company posing as a factory often finds reasons to delay or refuse.
- Look for third-party audit reports. Reports from inspection firms such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek (sometimes listed under "Assessed Supplier," or available on request) are a strong trust signal.
- Cross-check their address. Search the factory address on a map. A residential building or a shared office park is worth asking more questions about.
- Start with a paid sample, not a bulk order. A supplier unwilling to sell a single sample first is not one to trust with a full container.
- Search the company name outside Alibaba for reviews, complaints, or mentions on trade forums.
None of this replaces having someone on the ground to check in person, but it filters out most of the risk before you ever pay a deposit.
The safest path
Even with all these checks, sourcing from another country is hard to do alone. Our team is based in Shenzhen. We visit suppliers, verify factories in person, negotiate on your behalf, and inspect goods before they ship. That removes most of the risk. If you would rather not gamble on a stranger online, tell us what you want to source and we will find vetted suppliers for you.
