Common Mistakes First-Time Importers Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Importing from China is very doable, even for a first-timer. But a handful of mistakes trip up newcomers again and again. Learn them now and save yourself the cost of learning them the hard way.
Mistake 1: Skipping the sample
Ordering in bulk without seeing a sample is a gamble. Always approve a physical sample before committing to a large order.
Mistake 2: Ignoring the HS code
The HS code decides your duty. Many new importers find out their real cost only at customs. Classify your product before you buy.
Mistake 3: Comparing prices without Incoterms
A price means nothing without knowing what it includes. An EXW price and a CIF price are not comparable. Always compare on the same terms.
Mistake 4: Forgetting the total landed cost
The product price is only the start. Add shipping, duty, VAT, and delivery to know your true cost per unit before you decide if a deal is profitable.
Mistake 5: Paying unsafely
Sending money to a personal account or paying everything upfront is risky. Use secure payment methods and reasonable terms.
Mistake 6: Shipping each supplier separately
If you buy from several suppliers, shipping separately wastes money. Consolidate into one shipment.
Mistake 7: Underestimating timelines
Production and customs take time. Order early, especially for seasonal stock.
