Importing in Small Quantities: A Guide for Small Businesses and E-commerce

A common myth keeps small businesses from importing: that you need to buy a whole container to make it work. You do not. Here is how shop owners and online sellers can import from China in small quantities.

You can start small

Thanks to shared shipping and consolidation, you can import modest quantities cost-effectively:

LCL sea freight lets you ship a few boxes, paying only for the space you use
Air freight is ideal for small, urgent, or high-value batches
Consolidation combines small orders from several suppliers into one shipment

Mind the MOQ

Suppliers set a minimum order quantity, or MOQ. For small businesses, this is the real constraint, not shipping. Tips to manage it:

Negotiate; many suppliers will lower the MOQ, especially for a first order
Choose suppliers whose MOQ already fits your budget
Combine related products from one supplier to meet a minimum

Test before you scale

Starting small is not just about budget, it is smart strategy. A small first order lets you:

Test the product quality
Test the market demand
Build a relationship with the supplier
Learn the import process at low risk

Then you scale up what sells.

Keep your cost per unit sensible

Small orders cost more per unit than large ones, so factor that into your pricing. As you grow, consolidation and larger volumes will bring your cost down.
