When you ship by sea, you have two options: share a container with other importers (LCL) or book an entire container for yourself (FCL). Picking the right one can save you a lot of money.
With LCL, your cargo shares container space with goods from other businesses. You only pay for the volume you use, measured in CBM.
With FCL, the whole container is yours, whether you fill it or not. A standard 20-foot container holds about 28 to 33 CBM, and a 40-foot holds about 58 to 68 CBM.
As a rough rule, once your cargo passes roughly 13 to 15 CBM, a full 20-foot container often becomes cheaper per unit than LCL. Below that, LCL usually wins.
Do not guess. The exact break-even depends on the current LCL rate and container rate, which change with the season. Tell us your volume and we will price both ways and show you which is cheaper for your shipment.
