LCL vs FCL: Which Container Option Saves You Money?

When you ship by sea, you have two options: share a container with other importers (LCL) or book an entire container for yourself (FCL). Picking the right one can save you a lot of money.

LCL: Less than Container Load

With LCL, your cargo shares container space with goods from other businesses. You only pay for the volume you use, measured in CBM.

• Best for: smaller shipments, roughly under 15 CBM
• You pay: per CBM
• Pros: no need to fill a whole container, lower upfront cost
• Cons: slightly slower, as consolidation and deconsolidation take time

FCL: Full Container Load

With FCL, the whole container is yours, whether you fill it or not. A standard 20-foot container holds about 28 to 33 CBM, and a 40-foot holds about 58 to 68 CBM.

• Best for: larger shipments that nearly fill a container
• You pay: a flat rate per container
• Pros: faster handling, your goods stay sealed and separate, lower cost per CBM when full
• Cons: you pay for the full container even if it is half empty

The break-even point

As a rough rule, once your cargo passes roughly 13 to 15 CBM, a full 20-foot container often becomes cheaper per unit than LCL. Below that, LCL usually wins.
