What Is CBM and How to Calculate It for Sea Shipping

If you are shipping by sea, you will hear one word again and again: CBM. Understanding it is the key to predicting your shipping cost and avoiding surprises on your invoice.

What CBM means

CBM stands for cubic meter. It measures the volume your cargo takes up, not just its weight. Sea freight, especially LCL or shared container loads, is usually priced by CBM, because space inside a container is what you are really paying for.

The formula

To calculate CBM for one carton:

CBM = length times width times height, all in meters

For example, a box that is 0.6 m by 0.4 m by 0.5 m equals 0.12 CBM. If you have 50 identical boxes, that is 50 times 0.12, which is 6 CBM total. If your measurements are in centimeters, divide the result by 1,000,000 to get cubic meters.

Volume vs weight: the chargeable rule

Carriers charge by whichever is greater, your volume or your weight. For sea LCL, the common rule is that 1 CBM is treated as roughly 1,000 kg. So if your cargo is light but bulky, you pay by volume. If it is small but very heavy, like metal parts, you may pay by weight instead. This is called chargeable weight.
