How to Find Your Product's HS Code (Step-by-Step)

You know an HS code matters. The harder part is actually finding the right one for your specific product. Here is a practical way to work through it.
Step 1: Describe your product precisely
Start with a plain, accurate description: material, function, and how it is presented for sale. "Plastic toy" is not enough; "battery-operated plastic toy car for children" narrows things considerably. The more precise your description, the easier classification becomes.
Step 2: Identify the chapter
The Harmonized System groups products into 21 sections and 97 chapters, broadly by material and industry, for example textiles, machinery, or plastics. Identify which chapter your product's core material or function falls under.
Step 3: Narrow to the heading and subheading
Within a chapter, headings get more specific, and subheadings narrower still. This is where most classification mistakes happen, since similar products can sit in different subheadings depending on small differences in material or use.
Step 4: Check the national tariff schedule
The first six digits of an HS code are the same worldwide. Bangladesh, like most countries, adds extra digits for its own tariff schedule. Bangladesh's National Board of Revenue publishes the tariff schedule that determines the duty rate that applies at the border, so the final digits specific to Bangladesh are what actually decide your cost.
Step 5: Cross-check with a similar, already-cleared shipment
If you or your freight partner have imported a similar product before, the code used on that past shipment is a strong reference point, provided the product is genuinely comparable.
Step 6: When in doubt, ask before you ship
Classification is not always obvious, and two reasonable people can read the same product differently. Getting it wrong after the goods have shipped is far more costly than confirming it beforehand.
