Understanding Import Duties and Taxes in Bangladesh

Many first-time importers are surprised by their final bill at customs. The product price and shipping are only part of the story. Duties and taxes can add a significant amount. Here is how it works in Bangladesh, in plain language.
The main charges
When goods arrive in Bangladesh, the National Board of Revenue applies several charges. The most common are:
- Customs Duty
- Value Added Tax
- Supplementary Duty on some goods
- Advance Income Tax
- Regulatory Duty on certain items
Not every charge applies to every product, and the rates vary widely depending on what you import.
The HS code decides your rate
Every product has an HS code, an international classification number. Your HS code determines exactly which duties and what rates apply. Get the code wrong and you could overpay, underpay, or face delays at the port. This is why classifying your goods correctly is so important. A small difference in the code can mean a large difference in duty.
Duty is calculated on the assessable value
Charges are usually calculated on the assessable value, which is generally based on the CIF value, the cost of the goods plus insurance and freight, not just the product price. So shipping and insurance can affect your duty too.
Why we do not publish fixed rates
Duty and tax rates change with the national budget and differ for thousands of product categories. Any fixed number you read online may already be outdated. The reliable way to know your cost is to have your specific product classified against the current tariff.
